About the Founder
Evelyn Mack Academy named after its founder Evelyn Mack who was inspired by the Lord to start a tutoring center back in 1989. In 1998 Evelyn Mack Day School started and later on the name was changed to what is known to us today as Evelyn Mack Academy.
Evelyn Mack received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education from Bethune-Cookman College located in Daytona Beach, Florida, and her Master of Science Degree in Education Administration from Eastern Illinois University Located in Charleston, Illinois.
Evelyn Mack is a former educator who worked in the educational arena as a teacher for several years before starting the academy. She taught school in Detroit, Michigan, Charleston, Illinois, Decatur, Illinois, Des Moines, Iowa and here in Charlotte, NC before becoming a Law Enforcement Officer here in the city of Charlotte. She is also an aspiring actress who had an extra part in the TV movie “Having Our Say.” Mrs. Mack is also a phonics consultant where she has trained hundreds of teachers on how to teach students using the Discover Intensive Phonics Program. She is now the proud owner of Evelyn Mack Academy and Tutoring Center.
The journey began when Mrs. Mack realized that her son was struggling in elementary school, believing that if she did not do something to help her son he would not graduate from high school. She took it upon herelf to get help for her son and she met Charlotte Lockhart, Author who used her program with her son. It is when Mrs. Lockhart taught him the 42 sounds of alphabet, the five phonetic skills and the two-steps decoding skills that changed his young life and opened up the world of reading for him. The program worked so well for her son until she began using it in her tutoring center and in her school to help those students who struggle in reading. “I am a firm believer in teaching the basics skills to children because it is where the solid foundation is built.” You must have a solid foundation in reading and math in order for one to succeed in school and in life.
The Discover Intensive Phonics is used at the Evelyn Mack Academy today where many children as well as adults have been and are being helped; we are making difference in the lives of children and adults.
